Eight Seats and a Letterbox
Shanghai, China. 2007 - 2008
With a population of 20 million, mobility is an important aspect for Shanghai and indeed China. The streets of Shanghai are crowded and busy. Walking these streets one notices lonely chairs positioned at corners, in doorways, at shop fronts, bus and bicycle shelters. Some are well kept and some appear to have been abandoned to the street for years. Some are too large to move while others are locked to shutters. The worn seat became a motif for me as I traversed the city, evolving into a metaphor for inertia and mobility when juxtaposed with other objects such as bicycles and a letterbox. The series was produced in the form of a hard-back book: Buckram finish, 12 pages, 9 colour plates, 340mm x 240mm
